5 -everybody ed everyone-
Nota d'usoAnche se everybody e everyone possono essere tradotti con “tutti”, bisogna ricordare che si tratta di pronomi singolari che sono pertanto sempre seguiti dal verbo alla terza persona singolare: Everybody knows that she is very serious (non Everybody know she is very serious), tutti sanno che è molto seria. -
6 -to give o to get?-
Nota d'usoIl verbo regalare corrisponde a “to give” o “to get”, con sfumature di significato leggermente diverse. Esistono inoltre i verbi “to gift” e “to present”. Il primo viene usato per lo più in contesti figurati: Sbagliando quel rigore, Jones ha regalato la coppa all'Arsenal, with that penalty miss Jones gifted Arsenal the cup. “To present”, invece, si riferisce soltanto a regali di una certa entità e viene usato di solito in contesti ufficiali: La signora Thomas ha regalato dieci nuovi computer alla biblioteca, Mrs Thomas presented the library with ten new PCs. -
7 -recover o re-cover?-
Nota d'usoI significati principali del verbo to recover, senza trattino, sono “recuperare” e “rimettersi”, “riprendersi”, ad esempio dopo una malattia o un infortunio: She never really recovered after the shock of her husband's death, non si riprese mai veramente dopo lo shock per la morte del marito; The police eventually recovered all the missing diamonds, la polizia alla fine recuperò tutti i diamanti smarriti. Il verbo to re-cover, con trattino, significa invece “coprire di nuovo”: We decided to re-cover the dining room chairs, decidemmo di coprire di nuovo le sedie della sala da pranzo. Come accade anche in italiano con “ri-” (o “ra-, rin-”), in inglese il prefisso re- all'inizio di un verbo spesso indica che si tratta di un'azione ripetuta “di nuovo”: to re-elect, rieleggere; to re-examine, riesaminare; oppure to re-sign, firmare di nuovo, mentre to resign, senza trattino, significa “dimettersi”. -
8 -TG o news?-
Nota d'usoIn inglese non esiste un termine specifico per indicare il telegiornale o il TG, ma si usa il termine generico news: Hai visto il TG?, did you watch the news? (il verbo to watch sottintende che si tratta del telegiornale). -
